What two Canadian plumbers thought was a copper light fixture turned out to be something much more valuable.
Alif Babul and his newly hired apprentice, Dean Materi, were renovating the bathroom of a Calgary home when they noticed something shiny in the discard pile, the Calgary Herald reports.
"I seen a gold shimmery thing on the ground," said Materi. "But when I went to shovel it up, it seemed kind of heavy. I picked it up and it was a gold brick."
It was a quite the surprise for Materi, who was on day two of his new job with Perfection Plumbing & Gas. He noticed the one-kilogram bar was stamped with a serial number and a jeweler's imprint. A little research revealed that the find was worth close to $40,000 USD (more than $50,000 in Canadian dollars).
Babul and Materi ed the homeowners, who confirmed that they were indeed missing a gold bar. They had previously searched the bathroom for it with no luck.
Babul told the Herald he believes the treasure was hidden near the bathroom's jacuzzi tub but was gradually moved by the vibration of the motor.
"Finding a gold brick underneath a tub is kind of strange," Babul said.
In fact, a gold bar isn't the only striking thing he's found while renovating homes — he's also uncovered several rare original Daredevil comics at a previous site.
