35 Things You Never Knew About Chip and Joanna's Kids

Drake, Ella, Duke, and Emmie Gaines have been kept largely out of the spotlight.

Beyond the beautiful transformations and hilarious Chip-isms, one of the reasons we love Fixer Upper so much is for its honest depiction of family life. Chip and Joanna Gaines are a real couple, with four genuinely lovely children: Drake (11), Ella Rose (9), Duke (8), and Emmie Kay (7).

The Gaines kids may be more well-known than your average adolescents, but for having such famous parents — and being heirs to the Magnolia empire — there's still so much we don't know about them. That's because the Fixer Upper stars have been careful to keep their kids largely out of the spotlight. Still, their show, book and Instagram feeds have given us an inside look at a few sweet family moments. Here's what we've learned from following along.

Symmetry isn't just a design element for this family! The Gaineses have two boys and two girls, in a boy-girl-boy-girl pattern. But they're not stopping there...

Baby number five is a boy.

Chip swears he can already tell it’s a boy. Look at the little heartbeat!! 🙌🏽❤️❤️ #5

From the time Chip saw the sonogram, he thought they were having a boy—and he was right! The star revealed Baby Gaines's gender in March, and Joannagave birth June 23.

Chip and Jo's boys both have D-names...

Learning the value of hard work! #TimeWithMyBoys

The couple has a pattern of giving their sons single-syllable names starting with the letter "D." They already have Drake and Duke—and Chip revealed he and Joanna are looking for another D-name for their new baby boy.

...and the girls have 'E' names.

Love conquered death 💛

Meanwhile, the girls have dual-syllable names beginning with "E," followed by a single-syllable middle name: Ella Rose and Emmie Kay.

What are Chip and Joanna's kids' ages?

Beautiful night at the ballpark with my family.. And big win for the Bears! Congrats @BaylorCoachRod

A post shared by Chip Gaines (@chipgaines) on

Drake, the oldest, is 13, followed by Ella Rose, 11. Then there's Duke, 9, and Emmie Kay, 8.

What are Chip and Joanna like as parents?

I dreamed I was being attacked by a sweet smelling koala bear and then I woke up... #phew #emmielou #illtakethisalldayeveryday ❤️🐨

Joanna may be a perfectionist with design, but her parenting style is a bit different. When it comes to her kids, she embraces all the moments (even the messy ones) as they come. And of course, neither she nor Chip is afraid to get silly, whether with dance parties or dad jokes.

The kids are a major reason behind the show ending.

My favorite episode of the season is on tonight!! I’m excited for you to meet my little sister and her beautiful family. Watch with us at 9/8 CT @hgtv

Chip and Jo have expressed that the desire to focus on family (as well as their businesses) is what motivated the hosts to step away from Fixer Upper afterSeason 5. We can certainly understand that!

They're not spoiled.

Their parents might be pulling in major dough through their show and business ventures, but that hasn't changed the way Chip and Joanna are raising them. The Fixer Upper hosts describe themselves as strict parents, particularly when it comes to phones and TV—Joanna told People the Gaines kids won't get phones till they go to college.

Anyway, the kids seem to prefer the simple things. For example, on Duke's birthday, "all he requested was balloons and mama's cinnamon rolls," Joanna wrote in an Instagram caption.

In fact, they seem to prefer the simple things.

All he requested was balloons and mama's cinnamon rolls... someone's got a birthday tomorrow!! #dukeman #sweetandsimple

They don't even know their parents are famous.

The family famously does not have a television in the home. "So they don't really understand that we have a show," Joanna said to People. "They don't get it."

But they're Chip and Jo's biggest fans!

My maiden run at the #siloDistrictMarathon has become a family affair. 7.2mile long run in the books! I got teary eyed this am when I saw this. But at mile 5 it was the only thing I could think of.. #iGotThis #DoSomething @gigrunewald

They even wrote Chip encouraging notes as he trained for the Magnolia Market marathon. "I got teary eyed this am when I saw this," the proud dad posted. "But at mile 5 it was the only thing I could think of." So sweet!

Chip & Jo keep them out of the spotlight.

I just love tonight's episode!! Chip and I get to walk down memory lane and go back into one of the first flip houses we tackled together. I also have a super special design assistant on this project 😉❤️ Watch tonight at 9/8c @hgtv

When they are on Fixer Upper, the kiddos are usually playing on the farm or serving as mom's and dad's helpers.

Love when I get to take the boys to work - There's always lots to learn during #DemoDay. Don't miss tonight's episode of #FixerUpper 9/8CT on HGTV.

They've even helped out on some reveals.

Not only have Chip and Jo revealed certain projects to their kids (The Bakery at the Silos, Magnolia Table), but their four little ones have also participated in a few reveals themselves. This season, the kiddos unveiled their aunt and uncle's new abode.

Even when not on the show, the kids are often just out of sight!

My little work buddy. #fixerupper

Even when not on camera, chances are, the little ones were on set and simply strategically out of the shot, as outtakes and Instagram posts have revealed. Joanna said in her book that part of the reason she and Chip will only film within a 40-mile radius of Waco is so that they're always close to home for their kids.

Back when Joanna was running the original Magnolia Market on Bosque, she would take baby Drake to work every day. She has said that people used to come in just to see him—a fact that earned him the nickname of "shop baby".

Her boys are mama's boys.

I told him I would pay him by the minute for a foot massage- he said he would give me a discount. 😉 #ilikekids

And we mean that in the very best way. Look at that sweetheart rubbing his mom's feet.

OK, maybe they're Daddy's boys, too.

Both girls love to bake.

Their favorite part- the flour. Mine? The dough, eating it.

Here they are taking lessons. They can also weave on a loom and knit andmake jewelry and spin pottery.

The girls have been taking sewing lessons for a year now and for the last few weeks they have been talking about a surprise they are making. They finally finished this week and I just love this quilt and so do their "students" they are reading to! Hello weekend, I'm thankful for you.

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on

Ella and Emmie even made this amazing quilt. Seriously, is there anything these kids can't do?

More importantly, they are "fearless world-changers."

My girls! Unbridled! Untamed! Fearless! World changers! Arrows in my quiver! And… Just like their momma!

Ella has an eye for design, like her mama.

Chip and Joanna's eldest daughter, Ella Rose, assisted Joanna on a Fixer Upper episode last season, and last summer, she asked her mom if she could be a designer when she grows up. We think we know who's going to take over the family business one day!

She created all of these colors from scratch today! My little design bud at work 😍 #teamella

Duke is a cowboy, like his dad.

My favorite little cowboy. #dukeman

A friend just sent me this pic of Chip and Duke at the cattle auction. He creates so many teachable moments with the kids- Duke is gonna be a heck of a man because of it.

He helped Chip buy cattle at an auction, and he can catch fish with his bare hands!

... and he's got quite the sense of humor!

Hurry up and go play outside!! Then go back in and watch our new #fixerupper episode tonight 9/8 central on @hgtv . As usual you won't want to miss it!!

A post shared by Chip Gaines (@chipgaines) on

In a conversation with his sons that Chip shared on Twitter, he said, "Boys, when you get older I want to parachute with you guys!" Duke's response: "But dad when we're older you'll be almost dead?" Ha!

Duke loves baseball.

CHIP GAINES VIA TWITTER

He's a lefty and a "heck of a ball player," Chip said in an episode of Fixer Upper. It makes sense he would love the sport so much: His dad played college baseball for Baylor and as a kid wanted to be either a professional ball player or a politician.

Emmie is the free spirit.

I love her free spirit and her princess shoes

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on

Like many youngest children, Chip and Joanna's fourth child, Emmie Kay, is a little bit wild and fun—but seriously sweet.

Hello there.

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on

She's tiny but tough.

Emmie loves when he makes her wiggly tooth even wigglier. I love how tough she is and that she trusts her dad even though losing a tooth can be a bit scary. #toothfairyneedstoruntotheatm #thatsmilethough ❤️

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on

Don't be fooled by her small size: The baby of the family is brave! "I love how tough she is and that she trusts her dad even though losing a tooth can be a bit scary," Joanna captioned this photo.

"But what if I fall? Oh but darling, what if you fly?"

… and a #PlantLady like her mom.

I told her she would get a new plant every month if she keeps up with all her little cuties. We are running out of space. 💚😳#futureplantladyofamerica

"I told her she would get a new plant every month if she keeps up with all her little cuties," Joanna wrote. "We are running out of space."

The Gaineses seem like genuinely good kids.

I asked Emmie Kay what she would tell everyone as inspiration for the New Year... "Just be nice. To everyone. And unicorns if they are alive." 😍 #amen #tiptoes 📷: @alissaneely

"I asked Emmie Kay what she would tell everyone as inspiration for the New Year," Joanna shared. Emmie's response? "Just be nice. To everyone. And unicorns if they are alive."

There's an Adonis blue butterfly bush I had planted by the girl's window almost five years ago when we were renovating the farmhouse. I wanted butterflies by the girl's windows that they could see and enjoy. I never told them about the bush and honestly I forgot about it over the years. This morning I found my little Emmie sitting by her window looking excitedly at the bush and saying "Here she is! My little hummingbird comes every morning mom!" First, I didn't know she looked out for her bird every morning. Second, I forgot all about the bush and never told her if she looked out the window she would see the prettiest butterflies and hummingbirds gathered around it. It's hard not to think this is a lot like parenting... You sow seeds early on and work hard to be intentional and then over time you move on to new lessons and challenges. Then one day you look up and the seeds you planted in your little children's hearts are now in full bloom. Be encouraged today to keep pressing in and tending to their hearts. It will be worth it.

Joanna is open to expanding the family.

Getting ready for reveal #6. Forgot what it was like decorating with a baby!! I miss it! I wonder if my sister will let me keep him for a while... #hehatesit #seasonthreeiscoming

A post shared by Joanna Stevens Gaines (@joannagaines) on

"I look at life as the more the better. If I found out we were having another baby, I would be really excited," Joanna told People. "We like a full plate. That's just how Chip and I operate."

Now, the question is: Will they stop at 5 or try for 6?

Heaven on Earth right here. @kathrynkrueger #meltmyheart

We have a feeling it wouldn't take much to convince Chip.
